EU Kids Act: Protecting Children While Preserving Access to Games
15.10.2026
The European Commission's proposed EU Kids Act aims to strengthen the protection of children and young people online, including in digital games. While the legislative process is only at an early stage, the proposal could have significant implications for game developers, platforms, and players across Europe.
At Game Makers of Finland, we support the goal of creating safer online environments for children. At the same time, we believe regulation must be proportionate, practical, and built on existing successful frameworks such as the PEGI age rating and parental guidance system, which has protected young players for more than two decades.
In the coming months and years, we will work closely with other industry stakeholders to ensure that the interests of both players and game creators are represented. Key topics include risk-based age assurance, the role of parental tools, the accessibility of games as cultural products, and ensuring that compliance obligations remain fair and feasible for studios of all sizes.
We will continue to follow the legislative process closely and keep our members informed as the discussion evolves.
